| 2009 TOBA Awards at Spendthrift Farm |
All thoughts turn to horses in September in Lexington, Kentucky. TOBA, the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, will host its 25th annual awards ceremony on Friday, September 10, followed by the September Yearling Sale at Keeneland, September 12 through September 26. And added to the mix this year will be the World Equestrian Games, against the backdrop of the second installation of HorseMania, the public art project.
Today, KET will air the premiere of Beyond the Stone Fences, a documentary profiling six regional horse farms (10:30 pm, EST; check local listings).
Executive producer and co-director Doug High, of Lexington’s High Impact productions, says “it was important for us to launch this film now, amidst the excitement generated by the World Equestrian Games, International Equestrian Festival and other related activities in order to educate a broader audience about one of Kentucky’s most high profile economic engines. With the equine industry financially stung from this economy, we hope our documentary will have an immediate, positive effect by showcasing our horse farms and the dedicated people who work them.”
Included in the documentary are footage and interviews from Lexington’s Calumet, Donamire, Crestwood and Mt. Brilliant Farms; Winstar Farm in Versailles; and Three Chimneys Farm in Midway.There are scenes from now-closed-to-the-public Calumet Farm; views of the Man O War Barn and victory bell at Mt. Brilliant Farm; Three Chimneys’ paddocks of celebrity horses such as Big Brown and Smarty Jones; footage of Winstar Farm, producer of the 2010 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winners; Crestwood Farm’s family-run business; along with the famous architecture and rolling hills of Donamire Farm.
The program was co-directed and written by Al Greenfield, who collaborated with High on the 2008 film Bourbon and Kentucky: A History Distilled, and the 2009 award-winning documentary Vintage Kentucky: The Vine to Wine Experience. Both docs are in current rotation on KET, and Bourbon and Kentucky has been syndicated to PBS stations across the country.
