John Darko’s Change for Art Meter Dedicated

Lexington’s Change for Art program unveiled the final installment in 2011’s Art Parking Meters October 30 at the Kentucky Theatre.

Artist John Darko presented his new work, a metal sculpture that includes geo-caching and a receptacle for messages, to the crowd gathering for the Thriller parade downtown Sunday evening.

Change for Art grew out of ideas generated at the 2010 Now What Lexington conference, conceived as a sustainable public art project that would transform Lexington’s outdated parking meters into works of art.  The project has since collected more than $5,500 dollars in funds through individuals and collection from the meters. Darko’s work was sponsored in part by LFUCG and Dr. Nick Kouns.

While the meters have all been re-created as pieces of public art, they all still accept coins (and fund more art).  Meters are currently located at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, home of the Lexington Legends, Good Foods Market & Cafe, and Buster’s Billiards & Backroom.
