Lexington’s 2014 Pool Season Comes to a Close

Dog Paddle
Our four-legged friends can’t WAIT for the pools to close so they can jump in for the annual Dog Paddle at Woodland Park.

With temperatures in the 90s, it’s hard to believe that the end of the summer is just around the corner. But soon enough, the newspaper inserts will fill with “Back To School” sales, The University of Kentucky campus will no longer seem like a ghost town and Commonwealth Stadium will fill with fans of all ages, creating a sea of blue and white. Along with gaining everything that we love about autumn, we lose many residents’ favorite way to relax and cool off in the extreme temperatures: in our local swimming pools.

So, when do the pools close?

The Douglass and Picadome pools will close for the season on August 3 at 6 pm.

The aquatic centers located at Southland and Castlewood will stay open until August 12 at 6 pm.

The pools and aquatic centers at Shillito, Woodland and Tates Creek will remain open on adjusted hours through Labor Day.

From August 13 until September 1, operating hours will be Monday through Friday 4 to 7 pm, Saturday 11 am until 7 pm and Sunday 1 to 7 pm. Labor Day (September 1) pool hours will be 11 am to 5 pm. More information can be obtained by calling: 859-288-2900.

The Jacobson Park Boat Dock will be open on weekends only until September 28 at 7 pm.

Just five days after closing the pool for the season, the Woodland Aquatic Center will host the annual Dog Paddle from 9 am to 3 pm on September 6th. Owners are invited to bring their dogs out for a swim (Sorry, no humans allowed in the water), with all proceeds benefiting the creation and maintenance of dog parks in Fayette County. Call 288-2980 for more information.
