Guy Mendes, Marble Creek in Summer, silver gelatin print, 16″ x 20″

Marble Creek/Endangered Watershed

Photographs by Guy Mendes

Opening Thursday, September 19, 2013, 5 to 7 pm

Guy Mendes has photographed Marble Creek, a Kentucky River tributary in Jessamine County, since 1975.  For 38 years, Mendes has carefully observed this pristine place in every season. “The Marble Creek Gorge is a microcosm of central Kentucky’s natural landscape: a deep and meandering watershed that drains rolling hills and fertile fields. It’s a prime example of what this part of Kentucky was like hundreds, even thousands of years ago.”  Now, Mendes is exhibiting his numerous photographs of Marble Creek in this solo exhibition on the first floor of the Ann Tower Gallery in an effort to raise awareness about the I-75 Connector which threatens to destroy it.

“Over time, I came to see the photographs I made [at Marble Creek] as a way of returning the favor for the many lessons learned, for the spiritual nourishment, and, of course, for the swimming hole on a hot day.” Mendes says. The 20 prints in this exhibit are all film-based, most of them made with a 4 x 5 view camera.
