Art: UK Sculptural Excellence Opening, Lyric Theatre

October 30, 2014 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

University of Kentucky sculpture professor Garry R. Bibbs brings the past 25 years or “UK Sculptural Excellence” to an exhibit opening Thursday, Oct. 30, at the Lyric Theatre and Cultural Arts Center in Lexington.

Bibbs has taught sculpture at University of Kentucky for 25 years, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Many of his students have gone on to create public art displayed across the nation.

Bibbs has completed more than 25 public art commissions through the Eastern U.S., including three in Kentucky at the new Transportation Building in Frankfort, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage and the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights. His numerous awards include, but are not limited to, the Ford Postdoctoral Fellowship from the National Academy of Sciences, the Al Smith Award in Sculpture and the Outstanding Kentucky Artists Award.

This exhibit features the work of UK students Bibbs has taught or is currently teaching. “For years, we have held a very high standard as one of the best sculpture programs in the country. The breadth of this exhibit will surely depict this standards,” Bibbs said.

A reception at the opening of the exhibit will be held Oct. 30 from 6-9 p.m. at the Lyric. For more information, call 859-280-2201.

The gallery is open from Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 1-5 p.m. Group tours are also available by appointment.
